Our new sauna in the inner harbor has been a journey – an idea that grew over several years after a visit to a lavvu at Stortorget in Tromsø. Inspired by Tromsø’s unique nature and the Sami and Kven cultural heritage, we wanted to create a place that is not just about warmth but also about community, belonging, and connection to nature.

In Tromsø – the gateway to the Arctic Ocean – adventurers like Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen sought inspiration and strength before their historic expeditions to the North Pole in the early 1900s. In many ways, the saunas serve as a bridge connecting you to the Arctic Ocean even today.

The project is the result of strong collaboration with local partners. The design was developed by Skapa Architects, and the construction was handled by Tromsø Håndverkerlag – a team of industrial carpenters, furniture makers, and boat builders who delivered an impressive piece of craftsmanship. LY Minihus took on the role of project manager, ensuring that all the pieces fell into place. From float builders to technical specialists, our projects come to life through excellent collaboration with skilled partners in the region.

The sauna is shaped like a lavvu, a symbol of unity and harmony with nature, and every detail has been carefully considered to create an experience of breathtaking moments that are as spectacular as the surrounding landscape.
Getting the 15-ton floating sauna in place was an exciting challenge, but it now stands as a testament to what we can achieve together.

This sauna is more than just a structure; it is a meeting place for people, a break from everyday life, and an invitation to experience the heart of Tromsø from within, rooted in the very origins of the city’s history.
